So, how do you know WHEN to transition your child out of the crib and into a bed?

In general, a child is ready to leave the crib between 18 months and 3.5 years; this is a big window, as there are several factors that will affect this timing.

SIGNS A CHILD IS READY TO MOVE FROM CRIB TO BED

1. Climbing out of the crib
If your toddler has started climbing out of the crib, it’s definitely time to consider the move to a big kid bed for a crucial reason — SAFETY. Though your little tyke may become a future gymnast, for now, climbing out of the crib can be dangerous for your child and unsettling for you.

While you decide on which bed for your tyke, be sure to secure the bedroom from safety hazards (ie dangling chords, items to climb on, etc) and consider putting cushions on the floor around the crib.

2. Asking for a bed
If your child is verbalizing that he/she would like to sleep in a bed, it’s definitely time to consider the move to a bed.

You can help your child get excited about the move by including your toddler in the process. Show your child pictures of the potential bed andexplain that this will be his/her special place to get cozy and sleep.

3. Outgrowing the crib
Outgrowing a crib means the child is too big for the crib.

What does “too big” for the crib look like?

~ Your child seems cramped in the crib
~ It’s too difficult for you to lift your child in and out of the crib
~ Even though you’ve put the mattress to the lowest setting, your toddler could topple out because he/she is so tall at the side rail.

4. Needing the crib for the next baby
If you have another baby on the way, the crib may be needed for the next munchkin. To help limit jealousy and frustration, it’s helpful to move your toddler to a bed before the new baby actually needs the crib (so your toddler doesn’t feel like he/she is getting kicked out and being replaced). Ideally, your toddler gets settled in a bed before the crib is in demand by the next little one.

And finally, if your toddler seems ready for the independence of a bed, it’s time to start thinking about what bed to get.
